Charlotte Riddell letters, 1858-1901.

The collection consists of two letters: to My dear sir, 26 April 1858, lamenting the lack of financial success of her novel, The Moors and the fens, and despairing that she will ever achieve success, to the extent that she considers relinquishing writing; to Thomas French, 1 April 1901, responding to his request for an autograph.

Author Charlotte Riddell was born in Ireland, and later emigrated to London. She began publishing novels and stories before her marriage, but debts incurred by her husband established her as the household's primary earner, and the ensuing pressure increased her literary output, possibly at the expense of quality.
